2017/2018 Bach Project/ Violinist Odin Rathnam, in cooperation with the Hershey Symphony, Paul Metzger, Gary Lysaght, Calvin Weary, Gregory Woodbridge and the York Youth Symphony Orchestra. Program also offered to various regional and national performing arts venues/organizations and to regional retirement communities, through collaboration with diverse regional corporate partnerships.
“This series of three concerts offers the complete unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas of Johann Sebastian Bach, supplemented by works By Ysaye, Kreisler, Piazzolla and Paganini, for variety, as I have personally found programs devoted to Bach alone a bit heavy, for all but the most devout aficionados. Each program, lasting approximately an hour, will be performed either with no intermission, or with a brief pause, as presenters desire.
Program One features the sunny E major Partita, Kreisler’s virtuosic “Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice” followed by the G minor Sonata and Astor Piazzolla’s provocative “Tango Etude No. 3”
Program Two begins with the A minor solo Sonata , followed by Ysaye’s passionate 3 rd Sonata, “Balade” and ends with the D minor Partita, the last movement of which is the famous “Chaccone”
Program Three frames the two last Bach works between two virtuosic ones. We begin with Nicolo Paganini Caprice No 11, Bach’s C major Sonata ( with the monumental fugue) then the B minor Partita of Bach, followed by Ysaye’s 6th Sonata , a tour de force of pyrotechnics laden, yet impressionistic music.
| The programs will be presented at participating venues, between July of 2017 and May of 2017, and can be combined with community engagement and educational outreach to schools. Portions of the project and individual concerts will also be videoed and live-streamed, when possible, as will some of the “ Bach To Schools “ outreaches and master classes. The “Bach to Schools” project makes portions of these programs and in school master classes and outreaches available to school districts in South and Central PA, in conjunction with scheduled performances in the various districts, allowing me to have a broader impact on the quality of musical training and inspiration than my private studio alone can ever do, and is as such an important and very meaningful aspect of the project to me!
I am extremely grateful to the Hershey Symphony for supporting this whole initiative with me. All proceeds from the series presented in Hershey will benefit the orchestra and help hatch exciting new chamber music and educational projects in the future! I am also excited to build in a component which brings these programs to the “Greatest Generation” many of who now are in assisted living, and whose devout support for classical music nurtured my own development as an artist.” |
